It was August, supposed to be summer. What a joke, the rain and been coming down for two days non-stop. The local river was filling up and people were starting to get concerned about the river bank breaking and the possibility of floods. If the river did burst its banks you would guarantee that my house would flood as the water will pass straight by. We ensured we had all paperwork upstairs and insurance papers to hand.

To try to prepare for this, we had sand bags piled outside the doors, but our main concern was the classic car in the garage. We had owned it for years and my husband was so proud of it. He polished it every week and took it to lots of classic car shows in which it had won a couple of shows. It used to belong to his grandfather and it was his pride and joy. There was no way we could move it as the whole village looked like it was going to flood.

The rain didn't stop and the river bank burst. The water just flowed and flowed. It did pass my house but also went into the house and we ended up three foot under water. We just had to wait for the rain to stop, then try and get the water out. Then the clean up began.

I have never seen devastation like it, my house was ruined, all of the years we have spent there and all of the love we have put into the house was just floating away along with the water.

Firstly, we had to get skip hire costs which we found had increased due to the demand for them. It was OK though as we had insurance, not like some of our neighbours, they decided to pass on the insurance to try and keep costs down.

We emptied out the house of debris and waited for the water to subside, then we could have a look at the classic car. My husband was more upset about the interior of the car getting wet than the fact that we had just put all of our belongings into a skip. He worked hard and restored the car to its former glory travelling all around the country to replace parts. He has built a lift in the garage now to store the car high up in case it happens again.
